As the Seasons Change, the Whales Return to Maui š

Thereās a subtle shift in the air and ocean as fall settled over South Maui. The trade winds soften, the morning light sharpens, and beneath the warm Pacific surface, an extraordinary annual journey reaches its destination. Humpback whale season is officially returning to Maui!
Every year, thousands of North Pacific humpbacks undertake a grueling 3,000+ mile migration from their icy summer feeding grounds in Alaska down to the warm, protected waters of Hawaii.
Why Do Whales Come to Hawaii?
While the nutrient-rich waters of Alaska are perfect for feeding, they are far too cold for newborn calves. The shallow, warm waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islandsāespecially the sheltered Auau Channel between Maui, Molokai, and Lanaiāprovide the ultimate ocean nursery.
Here in these pristine, calm waters, humpback whales mate, give birth, and raise their newborn calves, teaching them vital survival skills before the long journey back north. For a few magic months each year, Maui becomes the capital of humpback whale activity on the planet.
What to Expect This Season with Aloha Kayaks Maui
Our official 2027 Whale Watch Tours kick off on January 1st, right at the peak of the season when whale numbers in South Maui are at their highest.
However, Nature Doesn't Always Wait for the Calendar!
If humpback whales arrive early and begin surfacing along our morning paddling routes before January 1st, we don't ignore themāwe embrace the moment! On any of our standard morning kayak and snorkel tours during late fall and early winter, if whales happen to be nearby, we will pause our paddle, rest our paddles, and take in the awe-inspiring sight of these gentle giants from the water.
Why a Kayak is the Absolute Best Way to Experience Whales
While large motorboats carry dozens (or hundreds) of passengers, there is simply no comparison to being at eye level with a 40-ton humpback whale from the seat of an ocean kayak.
Silent & Eco-Conscious: Kayaks have no engines, propellers, or diesel fumes. We move silently across the water, creating zero noise pollution or stress for marine life.
The Magic of "Whale Song": Because there is no engine roar, when you dip your head underwater or simply sit quietly on your kayak, you can often hear the haunting, resonate songs of male humpbacks singing through the hull of your boat.
An Intimate, Eye-Level Perspective: Sitting just inches above the ocean surface offers a sense of scale and connection that a multi-deck vessel can never replicate.
Strict, Respectful Protection: We operate with complete respect for Federal and NOAA wildlife guidelines, maintaining a respectful distance and letting curiosity bring natural encounters to us on the whales' terms.
Ready to Experience the Magic?
Whether you're joining us for an early-season morning paddle or booking your spot on our Ultimate Maui Whale Watch starting January 1, 2027, spaces fill up quickly during peak season.
